Granite is like a very hard sponge.  If you spill oil or water on it,  granite will absorb it.  The oil or water will blot throughout the granite, darkening the area where it was spilled.  Granite wont hold the stain.  It will eventually pass through the stone.  Water will pass in a matter of hours or days depending on the thickness of the granite and humidity, oil may take 20, 30 or 50 years.  Oil stains will usually disperse throughout the granite to the point that the stained area is not as visible, but if you continue subject the area to oil spills, then that area will continue to darken.

Granite needs to be sealed to prevent oil and water from penetrating it.  Without a sealer, even  the sweat and oil from your hands and forearms will stain the granite over time from repeatedly touching and leaning on an area.  Kitchen countertops, vanities, fireplace and tub surrounds, etc. need to be sealed to protect them against that unexpected accident.

There are a number of different sealers out there on the market ranging from topical sealers to impregnators.  Topical sealers only seal the surface.  These sealers wear off and need to be reapplied every 6 months to a year.  The type of sealer we use, here at
AdGranite, is a silicone impregnator which penetrates the granite, similar to a Scotch Guard, and protects the granite for up to 10 years from normal household stains.  Once applied and cured there is nothing more you need to do to protect your granite.  This type of sealer is also used to seal marble tops, concrete and floor tiles.  Stones such as slate and limestone need a special sealer for porous stones.
