Slate is another material  which can be used for a Fireplace Surround and Hearth.    Its charater gives your fireplace an antique look.

CAUTION:   Slate is a very soft stone and is prone to scratching.  It stains very easily so it should be sealed.  Slate requires a special sealer made especially for poruos stone.
